During 1987, a group of concerned parents saw the need for a Pre-School in Pottsville. A building committee was formed and with the acquisition and notification of the Crown Land to the appointment of the Tweed Villages Community Pre-School as trustee, the building committee set out to raise money with numerous fund raising activities.
Previous to this becoming a reality, the Pre-School program was conducted in the Picnic Shelter ( fondly known by the locals as the “Shed” ) and then in the newly built community hall, shared with Senior Citizens and Meals on Wheels. A great deal of community spirit has gone into the founding and building of this service, by discounted tradespeople, voluntary labour and the community at large.
In July 1998 we applied for and were successful in gaining a one off capital grant, through the Dept. of Employment, Education Training and Youth affairs to extend our building and add an additional needs room. Once again this saw the involvement of committee, parents and community. The building extension was constructed by Kingscliff Campus of TAFE Building Apprentice Scheme. We were then able to deliver the service in a way which is accessible to all people.
This Pre-school is partially funded by the Dept of Education and Communities with remaining funds coming from fees. Our service agreement is based on community partnership principles, and other government agencies working together to plan and promote children’s well-being, development and learning.
Our ‘small town’ preschool now has to cater to one of the fastest growing areas in NSW.
As a result of this demographic change, Pottsville, once a sleepy coastal village has become a haven for young families seeking a sea change. This has resulted in several new estates in the Pottsville area. Pottsville Community Preschool now services the areas of Black Rocks Estate, Koala Beach, Seabreeze Estate, Cudgera Creek, Hastings Point, Round Mountain, Reserve Creek, Cabarita and of course Pottsville Beach and Pottsville Waters. (Black Rocks Estate stage 2, Seabreeze stage 2 and Koala Beach stage 3 are all in the process of selling new home sites.)
The Preschool is currently licensed for 40 children per day. As we are currently unable to meet our growing communities demand for preschool places we have been given a Federal Government grant to build two extra rooms for the preschool. We are currently undertaking this process and envisage opening up the new rooms in 2017.
We have been exceptionally lucky to secure two CBP grants to renovate our outdoor areas, once the build has been completed.
